Is Directional Drilling the Right Choice for Your Application?

Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), also known as directional drilling or trenchless drilling, is an integral part of pipeline construction projects. The innovative technology, which offers economic and environmental advantages, is used in the construction of flood protection dams, foundations, crossings under traffic ways and more.

Ironman Directional Drilling has over 20 years experience in the trenchless industry. Our experts offer drilling services to commercial, residential and industrial clients in the BC Interior, Alberta, and parts of Saskatchewan. We install utilities efficiently, safely and with minimal environmental disruption.

In this blog post, our technicians explain why directional drilling is the right choice for you.

What is Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD)?

It is a broad term used to describe any activity that isn’t executed in a straight line vertically down. Even in a vertical well, the drilling machine may sometimes have to drift away to avoid a stuck pipe or a geological formation, and then return to its initial path. The sidetracking capabilities of the driller are critical here.

HDD is a way to get utilities from one point to another without destroying the obstacles that are between the points. It is a better option compared to traditional drilling which can’t connect utilities in certain places.

Differences Between Traditional Drilling and Directional Drilling

Trenching is the most common way of installing and connecting utilities. There are certain limitations when this method is used as it can only be used when there are no roadways, buildings or other obstructions on the ground above the utilities. Directional drilling can be used in applications where trenching is usually used and also to drill under sidewalks, rivers, roads and even houses if there is a need for it.

Some benefits of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) are:

  •  Reduced soil disturbance

  • A single location to install different pipes

  • Lesser groundwater contamination

  • Reduced fractures to existing rock formations

  • Lesser shoring and excavation costs

  • Protects the ecosystem and adjacent areas

  • The weather doesn’t impact the process

  • Limited landscape and traffic disruption

  • Ability to drill beneath ongoing site operations and surface obstructions
